Depression: How to regain Emotional Stability

           Over the weekend I was watching the news and they talked about a lady somewhere in Lagos who committed suicide because she was in debt and she had nothing to pay back her debt, she probably had thought about it and the shame that comes with not being able to pay back debts, she probably felt she doesn't even have money to feed herself and children, she probably had a lot of things running through her mind. After I heard this news I got weak and really sad knowing there are better ways of handling issues of this nature better than just committing suicide and ending ones life.

         So many people after losing someone really close to them, sadness, Depression and frustration creeps in and they just wish there is somewhere they could run to or someone that would just erase the memories they have of the person, some other people just live in denial.

         We live in a nation where there are about 1.5 million cases of depression per day. Depression is a consistent feeling of sadness or loss of interest that can lead to a range of behaviour and physical symptoms which include mental stress. Psychologists made it clear that depression is not just a physical problem its mental. Depression is more deadly than it seems but even at this, it is treatable and can be recovered from with time. Depression kills really fast, even faster than some deadly diseases, and people who have some of this "deadly" diseases die faster due to depression.

The cause of depression may vary, some which include;
  • Low socio-economic status
  • Low self-esteem
  • Loss of a close relative or property
  • Violence (physical, sexual, emotional)
  • New mothers (postpartum depression)
  • Could be hereditary
How to regain emotional stability
  • Avoid Ruminating: when passing through anything/ challenges, avoid thinking too much, over-thinking does more harm than good. Just acknowledge the fact that you are hurt and after this you move on. This may seem really difficult to do but with time you'll move on
  • Speak to someone about it; I always find myself holding things back, I never have the courage of speaking up about what bothers me, I prefer to cry and cry sometimes till i fall asleep. This is wrongest approach to solving a problem, as we all know the popular saying "A problem shared, is a problem half solved" Speak up, don't die in silence, find a companion, someone that understands and can give a good advice
  • find a distraction: when feeling depressed, find a distraction, something that could help forget your pain, something they will inspire you and make you find joy in life, if you love reading books, get some nice books and enjoy the moment, if its movies get nice ones (please don;t get horror movies or sad movies that'll remind you of your troubles and worries)
          PS- You can check my post on my favourite Nigerian TV Series
  • Make a positive move: if you always get depressed about some reoccurring issues. do                something about it, if you are in a relationship that always gets you sad and depressed, do          something about it before it gets too late, if you work where after getting home everyday you    cry and regret why you work there in the first place, please do something about it. Just make a  positive move that helps you regain your mental and emotional health.
  •  Use self affirmations: this is something that works a lot, when you feel down about an issue, just use positive words. say things that would lift your spirit up. say things like "I am        beautiful" "I am rich" "I am smart" just lift yourself up with good words
  •  Pray and Believe God: Pray about this situation expection for people who find themselves in a   family where Depression is hereditary and can do little or nothing about their situation, just       pray to God about it, talk to him and let him deliver you from depression.

  2. Thanks Dami for sharing! It is important to also encourage people who suffer from depression to try psychotherapy and medication (if prescribed by a psychiatrist).
